-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Legendary Greek entity Rotting Christ are a true certainty in terms of delivering abstract, yet fundamental album releases ever since their early foundation in 1989. Experimenting and stylistically metamorphosing throughout different, yet always obscure layers of elements from varying styles of heavier music has truly driven Rotting Christ to achieve a very distinct sound, giving the band a very special position within the realm of the black metal scene. Having toured all over the globe with bands such as Immortal, Blasphemy, Samael, Moonspell, Deicide, Behemoth, Theatre Of Tragedy, Gorefest, Tristania, Old Man's Child, Vader, Cradle Of Filth or Tiamat, being on the roster of the first ever second generation Black Metal tour back in 1993, and having visited rather unusual countries such as Colombia, Brazil, Peru, Malta, Siberia, Moldova, Mexico or Turkey, during the course of the years Rotting Christ have established themselves as a leading force within the black metal scene. This fact was easily emphasized by the 2004 release of a Brazilian tribute album entitled "An Evil Existence For Rotting Christ", where underground acts paid homage to one of their main influences.

The permanent line-up consists of brothers Sakis Tolis (born June 29, 1972, Athens, vocals and guitar) and Themis Tolis (born March 28, 1974, Athens, drums). Andreas Lagios (born November 11, 1972, Athens) has been the bassist since 1997, taking the stead of Jim Patsouris. Nightfall's Giorgos Bokos joined as a guitarist in 2005, replacing Kostas Vassilakopoulos.
Three keyboardists had previously been a part of the band; George Tolias, George Zaharopoulos and a session known only as Panayiotis (on A Dead Poem).

In their two decades of existence, the band started as raw black metal, but utilized what has been described as a "dark metal" direction on later releases, almost doing away with the black metal title, but not compromising their extreme sound.
During their rehearsal era in the late 1980s, the band began as grindcore and released various demos and splits with other bands from the Athens area. The group would later alter their sound with influence from proto-black metal bands like Celtic Frost and Venom, and in the process become one of the genre's instigators. Their 5 song demo, Satanas Tedeum, would show a grindcore/black metal crossover, followed by their career-breaking EP, Passage to Arcturo, in 1991.
One of band's first major appearances was on the 1993 "Fuck Christ Tour" consisting of Immortal and Blasphemy. During this concert, some audience members had engaged in cutting and self mutilation that resulted in hospitalization. Before signing to Unisound, Mayhem's Øystein Aarseth had expressed interest in distributing the band through his "Deathlike Silence Productions" label, but due to Aarseth's murder the same year, nothing materialized. The band would sign to Century Media in 1996 and remain on their roster for 10 years before joining Season of Mist.

I love Thy Mighty Contract and Non Serviam. Unfortunately though, Rotting Christ has overshadowed most of the Greek scene, depriving some great bands of the attention they deserve. And...I think they're a bit overrated *awaits bashing*

The fact they leave other greek bands in the shadow i agree. There is many amazing greek bands that (many) people are not familiar with like Bare Infinity, W.E.B, Crossover etc.
But i 100% disagree that RC are overrated ! I truly think that their music becomes better and better with every album and that they deserve the recognition they get.
opinions dude :!:
